Happy Chinese New Year

Happy OX year!! (年年有余)

Today is the fourth day of Chinese New Year (Ox Year), I would like to wish all Happy Chinese New Year & nian nian you yu!
Today is my first day start working after Chinese New Year. Even though, i have 5 days of holidays during this period, I didn't go for any fishing trip. This is because for according to traditional of Chinese (I'm a Chinese), we are not allow to kill during Chinese New Year & we are celebrating Chinese New Year for 15 days until Chap Goh Meh. During this period, it is believe that if there is any kill, it will bring unfortunate incident for coming new year. Even though fishing is not killing the fish, but it still hurt the fish. So, i would suggest to stop fish during this period.

Jitra again....

Fishing in Jitra... again

Yesterday is public holiday in Kedah (Sultan Kedah birthday). What else can do during this important holiday?? Of course, fishing is the number choice of my father......and me. So, i went back to Jitra for a short fishing holiday.......again.

Another again, my father bring to his favorite place deep in the country side of Jitra. Right sunny & hot weather, we start our trip with sharp 3.00pm!

First fish of the day: shun hok

Right reach there, we quickly put on the bait & throw into our target. Right after few minutes, my small frog was hit by a big fellow. I wait for few seconds, this big fellow slowly stole my line bit by bit. When i feel that's already reach a good timing, i lock my line and give him a shot! Sxxx, that's was too late, the big fellow already finish my bait. Right the other site, i heard my father laughing happily and he already get his first fish. Out of expectation, it's shun hok!

Catfish.....

After put on another bait, I throw into same place again for few times. Again, still my experienced father is the one who get fish. The 2nd fish of the day was a catfish. This catfish shoot out the line right after it bite the bait in center of pool.

It's my show time

Just within 15minutes, my father already get 2 fish but I'm still just watching. I throw the bait again into the same target where big fellow give me a big shot. This time proof me that my analysis is correct. Another big fellow target on my small frog. I keep my line slowly & slowly, half way back to bank, i purposely stop for a while. This fellow cannot tahan the small frog & give it a bite. Within 15second, it's my time to give him a shot & after 1 minutes, this fellow land on the back. It's a snake head of the day.

Ha, right after that, it's my show time. Another fellow watch on my bait after i throw another new frog into center of the pool. The fellow slowly follow on bait & give it a sudden shot. My line is move from center of the pool to side of the pool. I quickly give it a big shot. Again, this fellow is surrnder just within 90second.

After the fish, we follow by some bite. However, the fish become clever. They just bit on the leg of the small. Everythime we give them a shot, we are not sucess to hook on fish. You can see the leg of the frog is alredy hurt. We fish until 6.00pm & no more fish want to eat the bait so we keep all things and went back.

Long holiday: fishing in Jitra

Fishing in Jitra

Nice view of the fishing spot in Jitra, Kedah

The recent long shutdown of my factory, I went back to my hometown, Jitra & had a fishing holiday through out the whole week. One of the memorable fishing place that i ever went is Jerlun, northern part of Jitra. As I mention earlier in few last post, Jitra is the main paddy plantation of Kedah. There are many rivers is built just right beside the paddy field for plantation purpose and these rivers become our target for this trip.

Paddy field

River beside the paddy field always the best place for snakehead

This time, my father wake me up earlier in the morning to bring me to a beautiful river beside one large paddy field in Jerlun. My father is snakehead lover. His main target is only snakehead all the time. This kind of river always the habitat for snakehead family.

The only fish get for whole AM.....

However, that day is not our day. Even though the place is beautiful, but fish is not active. My father get 2 bites but coludn't land the fish whereas I only get one bite & get the only fish for the trip. Anyway, the beautiful scenery there give me a good relaxation.

Fishing in Kulim

Where to fish in Kulim?

This is one of the place that I can think of in Kulim where people go to fish - Tasik Putra. It's just next to Kulim Hotel Seri Malalaysia & Kulim bus stand in other side. It is a quite large tin mining pond in the past years back. After the tin mine already finished, the related persons left over this big pond. Nowadays, it has become a recreation park with jogging track & playground.

I haven't try myself yet in this pond. However, I did visit to this pond several times for walks after meal. I found that there are many peoples come during evening time & also weekend for fishing. I have seen people get tilapia around 300g~400g. What's interesting, I'm surprise that there are many "waste eating fish" or ikan MPKK (locally called) in this pond and bite the bait. The size is very big for this fish.

However, I found that this pond is very dirty where the pond size is full with rubbish, plastic, wood & many many other waste. This is the attitude of Malaysian that always throw rubbish in drain, river & pond. I think this is one of the reasons why the ikan MPKK is so large.....

Fishing in Kulim: Lembah Impiana

Fishing in Kulim: Lembah Impiana

Pond in Lembah Impiana, Kulim

This pond is built once this housing area is built. Since that, I found many many peoples fishing at this pond. Everyday, average of 10 to 20 persons come here for fishing. However, so far, I can only see people get tilapia in this pond.

I have tried myself to fish in this pond. Using fresh water prawn as bait, the tilapia here will never let you down. They welcome me warmly with bites in almost every 5minutes. However, the size of the tilapia is not large, averagely below 300g as shown in the picture beside. Within 2 hours there, I manage to get around 20fish. All of these fish are release back to pond.

Fishing in Kulim

Many people always ask: where can fishing in Kulim?

So far, i've been staying here for 2 years, the only place that i know & the only place i fishing in kulim are Tasik Putra next to Bus station & Hotel Sri Malaysia & pond in Lembah Impiana that i saw people fishing. However, sadly to say, the only fish that i saw people get is Tilapia.
I've try myself in Lembah Impiana pond many times. What i could say is that the tilapia there will never let you down if you use the correct bait. Several times I've been there & I can get more than 10 fish every time. This place is very famous now & everyday flood by people around here. I can see everyone bring back with quite a lot of fish & most of the time no one release back to pond. I think the fish population is getting finish one day.....

Record 3: Jelawat/ Sultan fish

Jelawat/ Sultan fish record: 800g

I dont know the English name for this fish but in Malaysia, we name it as ikan Jelawat (Jelawat fish) or Sultan fish. This is fish is captured during my college time in Johor during we visit to a private fishing pond in Yong Peng, Johor.

Record 2: Tilapia

Biggest tilapia so far: 600g

My personal record: Tilapia
Tilapia is the first fish that i learn how to fish. I've been fishing tilapia in first 2 years of my fishing experience but stop for the following years because cannot found other place to fish tilapia here. However, no large fish that i get for these 2 years and this is the biggest tilapia I ever get. Fishing in Jitra & Kedah is the most frequent in my fishing life. So, this record tilapia i ever get also found in Jitra, Kedah

This unlucky fellow bite my bait very near to bank and hook on its back also last minute before we go back. Since it is hook on its back, it is very heavy before landing on bank.

Fishing

Fishing

I start to involve in fishing since 15 years ago by using fishing rod made by bamboo, kiting line & small hook. My father is the one that who teach me how to fish.

History

In the early few years, I use to fish in swamp, drain & small river using the DIY fishing rod. I was born in Kedah, the rice bowl of Malaysia, and that's provide me lots of natural fishing place. In Jitra, my home town, is a countryside of Kedah & main paddy provider of the state. There are many human made river (for paddy plantation purpose) & paddy field in this small town & this become very good habitat for fish like ikan puyu, snakehead & ikan lampan.

By using DIY fishing rod in those years, due to the limited distance can achieved, I can only get small fish like ikan puyu, white fish & small snakehead. However, i still enjoy the happy hour with my brothers, father & friends using the DIY fishing rod. By using the only transportation, bicycle, I’ve been visit to many of the paddy field & river around Jitra.

Many river & paddy field in Jitra that provide many fishing place in past years

Current

I've been stop for fishing for several years but now I'm back! Now, I’m no more using DIY fishing rod but industrial made sport fishing rod, Ryobi together with Shimano 4000. Actually, I have only several month of experience fishing using this sport fishing rod. Species that I ever get until today is Tilapia, ikan Puyu, ikan Lampan, Catfish, Snakehead, ikan Sultan & ikan Patin.

The recent long holiday during my office shutdown for one week, I enjoy several fishing days with my father around Jitra. We have been crazy fishing from 7.30am to 11.00am in the morning & 3.00pm to 7.30pm in the afternoon (8 hours working hours huh?). I break some of my personal record during this trip (even not that large since I’ve several month of experience only) which I will share in next few posts.
